Isaiah 53 (Part 10) - Isa 53:12 12. Isa 53:12 - Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. A. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, i. Because Christ justified many by bearing their sins and dying for them, God divided Him a portion with the great. a. Great men are kings (2Ki 18:19; Ezr 5:11) with large realms and empires (Est 1:20). b. Great men are men who are in powerful positions (Est 10:3; Dan 2:48). c. Great men are wealthy (Ecc 2:9). ii. After His victorious suffering and death, Jesus was rewarded with a mighty portion. a. Jesus Christ became the King of kings, the greatest man in the universe, after His resurrection (Eph 1:20-23; 1Ti 6:15; Rev 1:5; Rev 17:14). (i) All power was given unto Jesus Christ (Mat 28:18). (ii) Angels, authorities, and powers were made subject unto Him (1Pe 3:22). (iii) He was given an everlasting dominion, glory, and a kingdom in which all people, nations, and languages would serve Him (Dan 7:13-14). (iv) God highly exalted Him (Php 2:9-11). b. The Lord’s portion is His people (Deut 32:9). (i) God gave Him the heathen for His inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for His possession (Psa 2:8). (ii) Jesus was indeed given a portion with the great. B. and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; i. After His resurrection, Jesus bound Satan (the strong man) and spoiled Him (Mat 12:29 c/w Rev 20:2 c/w Col 2:15). ii. Through His victory on the cross, Jesus cast out Satan, the prince of this world, and took the spoil (Joh 12:31-32). iii. Jesus inherited all the kingdoms of the world which Satan had control over (Mat 4:8-9). C. because he hath poured out his soul unto death: i. Jesus was given a portion with the great and divided the spoil with the strong because he poured out His soul unto death. ii. When Jesus hung on the cross, He was poured out like water (Psa 22:14). iii. His soul was poured out when He gave up the ghost and died (Mar 15:37 c/w Gen 35:18). iv. Through death, Jesus destroyed Satan who had the power of death (Heb 2:14). v. Christ’s death was the means of spoiling Satan (see previous comments). D. and he was numbered with the transgressors; i. Jesus fulfilled this prophecy when He was crucified between two thieves (Mar 15:27-28). ii. Jesus suffered as a transgressor so that we could be freed of our guilt (2Co 5:21). E. and he bare the sin of many, i. Jesus was the lamb of God upon which God laid the iniquity of us all (Isa 53:6). ii. See notes on Isa 53:6. F. and made intercession for the transgressors. i. Intercession n. – I. 1. The action of interceding or pleading on behalf of (rarely against) another; entreaty, solicitation, or prayer for another; mediation. ii. Jesus made intercession for some of the transgressors who crucified Him as He hung on the cross (Luk 23:34). iii. After Jesus died, He went to heaven to enter into the holiest, having obtained eternal redemption for us (Heb 9:12). a. In heaven, Jesus appears in the presence of God for us to make intercession for us (Heb 9:24 c/w Heb 7:25). b. Jesus is our advocate who makes intercession for us before God (1Jo 2:1 c/w Rom 8:34). c. Advocate n. – 1. One whose profession it is to plead the cause of any one in a court of justice; a counsellor or counsel. 2. fig. and gen. One who pleads, intercedes, or speaks for, or in behalf of, another; a pleader, intercessor, defender. b. Specially, applied to Christ as the Intercessor for sinners.
